Hi people! We are group 3 and we are here to share with you about our experiences and thoughts on the Dachau Concentration Camp.

This is a brief history about the concentration camp.

The mastermind behind this camp was Hitler. The possible reason that historians came up to why he hated the Jews so much was because of his experiences when he was young. Hitler wanted to become an artist when he was a young man but he failed. He tried to sell his art work to the Jews but they gave negative remarks about them. Another possible reason was that he believed that that the German race, which was the Aryan race, was the superior race and that other races were deemed inferior. However, no one really knows why Hitler hated the Jews so much.

When we entered the campsite, the words “WORK FOR YOUR FREEDOM” were imprinted on the gate. This shows that Hitler wanted to tell the prisoners that if they could work and contribute to society, they would be freed eventually. However, no one was freed. During the tour around the campsite, we saw the undesirable living conditions of the prisoners. They were made to sleep in crammed barracks and on hard wooden planks. We also discovered that during roll calls in winter, the prisoners had to assemble in the opened air with only their briefs on, and during summer, they had to assemble in thick layers of clothing. The first person to collapse would be shot and only then would the others be dismissed.

We then visited the place where dead bodies were incinerated. Hitler wanted to incinerate the dead bodies so as to destroy the evidence of what he had done to the Jews as well as the other Germans. We also visited the gas chamber, which was used to poison the prisoners to death. Back then, the prisoners were actually being conned into stepping into the gas chamber. The Nazi soldiers actually told them that they were going to have a shower and they were told to strip off all their clothes and enter the chamber. After all of them have entered the chamber, the soldiers would lock the doors, thus enclosing the prisoners in complete darkness. Soon, poisonous gas was released into the chamber and the prisoners would collapse one by one and eventually everyone in the chamber died.
These atrocities came to light when the Allies invaded Germany and liberated those who were imprisoned in the concentration camps.

When the American soldiers found out about Hitler’s evil deeds and when Hitler knew that Germany was losing badly, he become unstable mentally and physically. He couldn’t take the blow and committed suicide at his underground bunker.

After the whole tour, we felt really sad for the Jews and other innocent people who had been ill-treated and tortured by the Nazis, and yet we could do nothing to help them. We also felt angry towards Hitler because we couldn’t believe that there was someone who actually tortured others so mercilessly without anyone being able to stop him.
From this, we have learnt that racism can lead to undesirable consequences and therefore, everyone should learn to live with one another in peace and harmony regardless of race or religion. We should not discriminate against each other. We should learn and understand about each other’s religion and beliefs and also try to accept them. This can prevent conflicts among the different racial groups and build up harmony.
