PART 2

Hello peeps!

I'm Natasha. I was fighting against time yesterday. So I've decided to split my post. Today's post will be more on appreciation. It's not a speech. It's my heart-felt words.

Firstly, i want to thank the school & the teachers for giving us this great opportunity to visit Europe. I understand that the 16 of us was the first batch of students who went to the furthest country so far. It's not an easy deal doing the planning. The teachers who went to Europe with us was Mdm Koh, Miss Sazryna & Mr Gavin. It's Europe that we went to. Not Malaysia. Having said that, it tells a lot. These teachers held great responsibilities. Knowing that the parents will be worked up if any mishaps happen to their kids, they still brought us there with great spirit. That's not all. We're privilege kids. The school purchased 4 mini lap tops & a video camera for our trip. I'm really thankful. Not forgetting Mdm Zurina who taught us how to present ourselves, Miss Kalida who interviewed us & the IT teachers who taught us on some IT skills. Thank you!

Secondly, i want to thank Mr Dan. He's our tour guide throughout this trip. I'm not sure if you'll see this but I'll go ahead with it. I remember that night when there was error in the itinerary. Though we had our dinner late, though we was behind time, though there was a little conflict with the organiser, i thought it was a blessing in disguise. Because from that error made, it made us realise we're lucky to have a tour guide like you. Someone who will fight for us. Someone who wants the best for us. You can choose the easier way out because you'll still get your pay. But you didn't. You persisted. You've brought many schools for oversea trip before. I'm sure many of the students have said thank you to you. To you, it might be just 'another thank you'. But i hope you know that it's from the bottom of our heart. Thank you!

Thirdly, I would like to thank Mr Jani. He's our main driver throughout this trip. He's in his 50's. He used to be a great sports man when he was younger. Most of the time when we're travelling, we'll be asleep. Even if we're not, we don't have do anything. We can rest. We can take pictures. We can chit chat. We can eat. However, that isn't the case for him. We had long bus rides. He has to stay awake through it all. Even when we're sleeping, he's awake. He drives carefully to ensure our safety. We do appreciate his effort & sacrifices. Mr Jani, to us, you're more than a bus driver. Again, thank you!

Fourthly, I'll like to thank the other bus drivers & city tour guides. If I'm not wrong, there's 3 other bus driver. The Doha city tour bus driver, the German bus driver who drove us to Munich & the last bus driver who drove us to the airport. Thank you! There's 3 other city tour guides too. One lady when we were in Venice, another lady when we were in Rome & the guy when we were at Pompeii. Thank you! It may be a short period of time that you've spent with us, but still, I'm really thankful.

Fifthly, I want to thank the hotel cleaners from the 3 hotels who helped us change the towels, empty the dustbin & keep our room neat. I may not have seen any of you. But i do recognise your effort. Without you guys helping us to clean our room, we wouldn't have sleep so soundly. Thank you!

Lastly, I want to thank the 15 of you. We may not have know each very well at the beginning but this trip marks the start of a new friendship. I'll remember the fun we had & joke we cracked. We've been taking care of one another. We've been entertaining one another. Without any of you, the trip wouldn't be what it was. I know that many of us has our close friends who didn't come for this trip. But of course, all of us are good friends too. I'll really hope we'll stay in contact. For all the memories we had & joy we shared, thank you!

Throughout this trip, i really want to thank the 3 teachers. Mdm Koh is always the one emphasising the do's & don't's ensuring we're safe. Miss Sazryna is always feeding us with food making sure that we don't get hungry. Mr Gavin is always cracking jokes, lightening the mood of the atmosphere.

For everyone, especially the 16 of us, our trip ends here, but our journey, learning & friendship don't end here. Of course, thank you for everything too. There's too much to name.

Going to Europe was like a golden ticket. Because i've learnt many life's lesson that we cannot buy or learn by reading the text book. Not only that. I've made some new friends. Yvonne used to my classmate last year. We talk lesser this year as we see each other lesser. However, this trip brought the both of us together again. I hope this will stay on. Harishini used to my primary school classmate. Ever since we came into this school, as we're in different classes, we drifted apart. But this trip brought us back together. We have no barriers between us now. That's why i say it's a golden ticket. Got to know new friends & get to know old friends better.

I guess making new friends, getting to know the teachers & learning more about Europe was part of this trip. However, i've got a bonus gift. From this trip, i also realise how important is kinship. I got to know how much my parents love me & how much they mean to me. Of course, i'm grateful to them too.

I mean everything i say here. I'm not paying lip service. Hope to see you guys soon!

Until then, take care!

Harishini's edited reflection

Ciao people!
Firstly I would like to thank Mdm Koh, Mr Gavin and Ms Sazryna for organizing this Europe trip. We have definitely learnt a lot of things about the history of four main countries, Qatar, Germany, Austria and Italy.

Qatar
As we had around six hours of transit in Qatar, the teachers arranged a Doha city tour for us. I have gained a lot of knowledge about Doha through this city tour. The weather in Doha is real good! It’s like the sun is out but there’s cool wind as well! We went to see how camels were sold. Camels were bought for their meat and milk. We took loads of pictures of the camels. We also went to the place where horses were trained for racing. However, placing bets on horses was strictly prohibited. This is against the Muslim religion. We got a chance to see the horses swimming in a pool. This was to make them stronger to race. Next we visited the falcon market. Falcons were a symbol of high status. Only the rich could own falcons. The people who lived in Doha receive free education, free water supply and free land. However this is paid for by their heavy tax payment.

Germany
In Germany we visited the swan castle, Dachau concentration camp and had our school exchange programme. The swan castle was very beautiful. Sadly, we could not take pictures as everything in it was original. Next up, the Dachau concentration camp. It was built by Hitler. He mistreated the Jews and some Germans there. We got the opportunity to see how they were tortured by Hitler and his followers. It was truly an eye opener for most of us. My group did the presentation on Singapore. The students in Gymnesium Bad Aibling were very hospitable. Although they did not have a strong command of the English language, they tried their best to explain to us about their school.

Austria
On the way from Germany to Venice, we stopped over at the Salzburg Salt Mine. We went there to get a first hand experience on how the miners mine salt. We got all geared up in miners clothing and went down many slides till we reached the deepest part underground. It was extremely fun and exciting.

Venice
We headed towards Venice in a water taxi as there are no roads in Venice at all! It is surrounded by water and there were only two means of transportations, water taxies or gondolas. Venice is a really beautiful place, it also attracts many tourists. The main highlight I believe for many of us was the delicious gelato!

Gelato!(:

However, due to global warming, the sea level in Venice is rising and thus, there is a high possibility that the whole of Venice might be underwater in years to come. Hence, I feel that every single one of us should play our part to save the environment by, Reducing, Reusing and Recycling.

Gondolas

Rome
As for Rome, it is a rather busy city. The place is rather unorganized. We visited Vatican City. At Vatican City, we visited St Peter’s Basilica, a Roman catholic church. We also saw where the pope lived but did not get to go in. We also visited the Sistine Chapel and Raphael Rooms. We learnt more about Michael Angelo, who was the one who built the Sistine Chapel. We were allowed to take photographs but without flash as they were all original and if taken with flash, would fade. Next we went to the Colosseum

Colosseum

We also learnt that gladiators were actually slaves who had to battle against wild animals and only if they won, could be freed. Following that, we went on to Pompeii. Pompeii no longer exists as it was totally demolished and wiped out by the volcanic eruption of Mt Vesuvius. It was a horrible site, seeing the people in the positions they were when they were killed.

Position before dying

We headed on to Mt Vesuvius where we climbed up to see the crater. Although it was a tiring climb up, we managed to do it as we co-operated with one another. We are all proud of ourselves for our achievement. It was a magnificent sight. We took lots of pictures of the active volcano.

Crater of Mt. Vesuvius

Last but not least, i would like to thank Mr Dan for explaining to us in detail about the places we were about to visit along the way. The most important person we would have to thank would be Mr Jani, without him, we would not have been able to travel to one place to another!

Signing off,

Harishini (:

Overall reflection by Raveena

Ciao people Raveena here,
I have learnt a lot of things when I went for this trip. Firstly we went to Doha as it was our stop over we saw many tall buildings and went into a big mall. It was the biggest that I had ever seen. Next we went to Munich, Germany where we visited the Dachau Concentration camp were we learnt about the Holocaust. We found out how they ill treated the Jews. The Jews had no dignity or any status in that camp. People living near by did not have a clue what was happening there. Hitler gave them a positive image about the concentration camp. It gave the most impact as the place was the most touching in the whole trip as we learnt the consequences of racism. We went to the Neuschwanstein Castle and went to the Bad Aibling Gymnasium School where I had to dance I was scared at first but in the end everyone liked it. This also boosted my confidence level a lot.

We also went to many other places like the salt mine in Salzburg. Even though it was a short trip to Salzburg, it was a very memorable experience and the salt mines were not boring at all it was actually a lot of fun and excitement especially the 2 slides. Next stop Italy where we first went to Venice and then Rome. We went to the beautiful Venice city and learnt a lot about its History. There were a lot of nice statues and marvelous paintings. The best part was the Church it was so big and the atmosphere was so peaceful and calm. I have learnt a lot there. When I went Rome, we went to the Colosseum which was such a wonderful place. We also had Gelato which was tasty and visited Mt. Vesuvius which was worth the long climb as the scenery was so beautiful that I have no words to express it.

Visiting these places has been once in a life time opportunities which was fantastic. I felt that I have been there for only 2 days because time flied over there. I will never forget the cold weather the new friends I have made and the wonderful memories I have taken with me back to Singapore. I would like to thank Seng Kang Secondary and the teachers for making it possible for me to go and visit so many places. I would also like to thank all my new friends that have made this trip funny, exciting and memorable. Even though I had a fever for a day, I won't remember that I would only remember those places and you guys. So take care of yourself and drink lots of water!!! Get well soo!!! :)

During this humanities trip, i have learn a lot. Things such as being independent, managing my own time and money, and how to get along with people who i don't know at first.

Firstly it was Doha. We went for a 1day tour, or could we say half a day tour in Doha. The place was not as deserted as most people think. There were even tall buildings in their city area. Some of it were even more beautiful than the ones in Singapore. Doha also have a lot of foreigners working there which is similar to Singapore.

Then it was Germany. The people there are much more friendly compared to Singapore and Doha. People will walk up to you and chat with you on the street. I had a few encounters, but it was a pity that the ladies were too mature. (hahaha)
The Bad Aibling Gymnasium school is an example.
Neuschwanstein Castle, and Dachau Concentration camp are the most memorable experience for me in Germany, Munich.

After that it was Austria, Salzburg. It was the first time i went into the saltmine. Before the tour started, i was like "What can we do in the saltmine?" But after that i found that it was not that boring as i thought.

Italy is next. First we visited Venice. Venice island is surrounded by the sea. There are no cars, motorcycles and high rise buildings on the island. Tourism is one of their economic income.
Rome is a busy city. Fountains can be seen almost everywhere. Cars too.. Cars there were park everywhere on the street. Some even in the middle of the road and traffic lights. Those were the bad impression of Rome. Other than that i think that it was beautiful with those old buildings and fountains around Rome city.
We also visited Mt. Vesuvius. It was the 2nd volcano i have visited.

Lastly i would like to thank all the teachers for giving me this opportunity to visit Europe.
Mr Dan for taking care of us & Mr Jani for making this trip safe for us. His driving skills is great.
&
lastly thank all my friends for making this trip memorable for me!

May's here to do her reflection :D

The 10 days to Europe had been a fruitful one.
I had gained lots of experiences from this trip.
This trip had not only bring my knowledge to a higher level but it also let me know know the importance of self discipline & friendship.

What had impacted me most was the Dachau Memorial Camp.
At the time of the Holocaust, the Jews were being striped of their possession & dignity.
How could a mere ordinary human being who became unstoppable, whipping out almost the entire Jews.
It teaches us that racism shouldn't be allow to exist.
When racism exist, there would be undesirable consequences like warring.

Lastly, I would like to thank the Humanities Teachers for all the efforts made to organise this trip.
Mr Dan for ensuring our safety & Mr Jani for driving us to the many different places.
And last but not least, all the other 15 of them who made this trip so memorable.
Something which I will never forget.

Dachau Memorial Camp.

Reflection on My Europe Trip

The trip was great. I learnt a lot.
I learnt to be more independant. Take care of ourselves. Get to know the world. Learn outside of the textbook. Spend money wisely. Time management. Get to know your classmates, school mates and teachers. I didn't know Hitler was so cruel. He trained his soldiers to be cruel and heartless. Eventually the Soldiers didn't feel bad treating Jews with cruelty.

The trip impacted a lot.
I gained more knowledge. I became self reliant. Become more responsible. Become a better person. Adjust to different climates and atmospheres. Learn the problems other people have.Become more bold to face challenges in life. Importance of friendship. To always have sense of urgency

I gained a lot from this once in a lifetime oppurtunity. It was a memorable trip.
I thank the teachers for organizing this trip and giving me a oppurtunity.
Thanks a lot!

Humanities Trip To Europe 2008!
One word, Fabulous!
This trip made an impact on me, and definitely is a trip that I will never forget!
I've learnt many things from this trip, so much that i can go on for days!
-
Firstly, friendship. I didn't know half the people here. We left Singapore in different group, and amazingly, we came back as 1 big group. It felt great! We were helping one another, encouraging, motivating and caring for each other.
We really got together, along with the teachers too!
To me, i really felt that the accompaniment is the one that made this trip an unforgettable trip!
-
Secondly, experience. Every place had different atmospheres and a different histories. And it's different experiencing it yourself compared to watching it from the television. Never did i thought that i will actually visit Europe. We visited Neuschwanstein Castle, Dachau Concentration Camp, Munich City, Salt Mine in Salzburg, Venice, Vatican City, The Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Pompeii and even climbed Mount Vesuvius which was an active volcano! The fact that i visited this tourist attraction places is unbelievable! The experience of climbing to the crater of an active volcano on Mount Vesuvius is a memorable one! Everyone was motivating and encouraging one another to the top. Not forgetting, singing the school song on our way down as it was like a Breakthrough for us. Although I've learnt about World War II, honestly, it didn't leave any impacts on me. I couldn't feel anything for those people. But after we were brought to the Dachau Concentration Camp and were made to imagine ourselves in the shoe's of those people who went through this war especially at the Gas Chamber, i was filled with anger and sympathy. Never did i thought that War would be to that extent. But however painful i felt, it cannot be compared to those who experienced it themselves.
Going to these places really gave me a new experience.
-
Thirdly, knowledge. I've absorbed many information from this trip.
A lot of information that i never knew and even bother to find out! -ashamed-
I've always admired the Colosseum but I didn't know that it was a place where fighter called Gladiators fight against humans and animals to the extent of people being killed and it was actually a form of entertainment in the past. Also, I've heard people saying that they visited Venice but i didn't realize that it was a city on water and there was no form of vehicle there! And I wasn't aware that Venice is going to vanish in time to come, which is because its sinking. Next, I didn't even know that Pompeii existed! People who lived in Pompeii in the past died due to an eruption of a volcano at Mount Vesuvius, which we climbed. We also got to see the moulds of these people's last moments before they died. Also, visiting the Dachau Concentration Camp made me realize how important multi-racial and multi-religion is.
And that everyone should prevent racism as it will not do any good at all.
-
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the teachers for organizing and bringing us for this trip. Which allowed all of us to experience, learnt and got together in many ways. Also to the school for giving a green light to this Humanities trip. Not forgetting Mr Den and Mr Jani. And most importantly, the other 15 teammates that made this trip an enjoyable and unforgettable one for me! Greatly appreciated!

Overall Reflection for Europe Trip

Hello people, here is Kah Min posting her reflection for Europe Trip.

But firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thanks the Humanities Teachers for organizing this trip. I would also like to thanks all the other schoolmates for making it possible this trip possible. Without you guys, the trip will not be sure a wonderful and memorable one.

We went to three countries in total, Austria, Germany & Italy. We visited the salt mine in Salzburg, Neuschwanstein Castle, Dachau Concentration Camp and Munich City in Munich and finally Rome and Venice in Italy.

Through this trip, I know that European Union is a political and economic union of 27 member states, located in Europe and the whole Europe is having the same currencies as they want to improve their economics.

Now I will share with you what I have learnt in Germany and Italy.

Germany:

  1. I have learnt from the Dachau Concentration Camp that there must not be racism at anywhere.
  2. Everyone should be treated fairly
  3. I will always remember quote Mr Dan told us:

“Watch your thoughts, they become words.

Watch your words; they become actions.

Watch your actions; they become habits.

Watch your habits, they become character.

Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.”

Frank Outlaw

Italy:

1. I know that there is even country smaller than Singapore, and it is Vatican City. Vatican City only has got 900 citizens in their nation. Vatican City is rule by the Popes (the leader of the Roman Catholic Church).

2. Mount Vesuvius was located in Rome and it is an active volcano!

3. Pompeii was once destroyed by Mount Vesuvius. And the whole city disappears.

4. Venice City is sinking and the sea level is rising, so if we don’t help to save it, it may disappear in 50 years times. So help to save by stop polluting the Earth.

Overall, I prefer germany than Italy as the traffic there is much more smoothier than in germany and there is also lesser people smoking there, which causes lesser air pollution.

However, I prefer the people in Italy as they are more friendly. :D

Through this trip, I really learn a lot. I will not forget what I have been taught. I would like to visit these places again and think from different angle, so that I can see things through many views and not just one. This trip also taught me to be independent, and see things from different view.

Once again, I would like to thanks everyone and everything the teachers have done for us. Thank you teachers for the joke and laughter, thank you Mr Dan for telling us the history of various places we have visited and also the jokes and meaningful quote and last but not least, Mr Jani for sending us all over the places even if he work overtime. Thanks everyone. I will not forget everything and I will keep this deep in my heart. Without anyone, this trip will not be a memorable one. Thank you again! :D

Aww~~ 10 days fly past jus like dat..a blink of an eye and its gone! Overall, I really enjoyed myself while going on this trip as i've got to know much more people better through this trip! What i've enjoyed most is visiting the Mt.Versuvius, Dachau Concentration Camp, Venice, Colosseum and the fountain in Rome. This trip will forever be engraved in my memories! Also, I will never forget our overall tour guide, Dan and also, our teachers in-charge, Mr.Gavin,Mdm Koh and Ms Sazryna. Though Dan faced some problems when bringing us for dinner as the restaurant gave the wrong directions and our bus driver drove to another city but luckily for us, Dan was able to resolve the problem by finding another restaurant for us. Mr Jani was our bus driver. haha. I'm starting to miss the days back when i was in Europe now!~

Similarities between Germany and Italy are:
Both are under the European Union (EU)
Both are the ones that started World War II

Differences between Germany and Italy are:
The traffic in Italy are terrible as the cars can just drive as if there's no law and order. I saw cars being parked in front of the traffic light too in Rome! whereas in Germany, the cars there are much more in order.
Germany is famous for the cars they manufacture and the beer produced there whereas for Italy, pizzas and spaghetties.

End.
Nicholas.

PART 1
Hello peeps!

I'm Natasha. It's currently Friday, 12.25 am. Make a guess where am i.. I'm at the teacher's office. I'm actually here for a camp. 2D1N. I'll be late if i post it tomorrow. That's why i decided to borrow Miss Sem's lap top to complete my reflection.

Alright. I shall officially start sharing my reflections. When Mdm Koh first told us that there's this Humanities trip to Europe, i was thrilled. However, i didn't anticipate that I'll be keen about this trip. Out of curiosity, i applied for this trip. Come to think of it, a paper merely with printed words (consent form) was like the golden ticket. I'll come back to this again.

After so much deliberations, the teachers announced the final 16. I'm definitely thankful that I'm one of them.

We then started having pre-trip sessions during our vacation. I can recall one of the session vividly. It was the one when Mr Gavin shared with us some videos. Some of which, are about the Dachau Concentration Camp. Those videos act as an appetizer. Because after watching it, i couldn't wait to visit Europe & witness the camp. It was also one of the reason that convince myself to leave Singapore whole heartily as i know very well that it'll be a place worth visiting to.

On the plane, one thing I've learnt is to be independent. Because I'm too used to my friends or family deciding what I'll eat when there's choices to choose from. So from taking the planes, I've become less indecisive.

I shan't go into detail where I've visited in the different places. Or else, I'll be able to publish a book. But I'll generalise what I've learnt from some visits.

After gathering what had happened in the Dachau Concentration Camp, i truly believe that everyone of us should be grateful for everything. Very simple things like toilet & water. It may sound silly. But take a few minutes & think about it. We honestly neglect little things in life that we possess. Every morning after we wake up, we'll use the toilet. A toilet has been an everyday place everyone will go to. So much that we never comprehend the importance of it. So much that we never pay attention to it. When we're thirsty, we can get water everywhere to quench the thirst. Just imagine life without this 2 things. It plays a big role to our daily needs yet we never take notice of it. Let alone, appreciating it.
Singapore is a clean & safe country. Yet many are always whining about this & that. As we go around the world, we'll discover that we're very fortunate people. There's many others who are living in so much more agony physically & emotionally.
Besides that, I've also learnt that one has to stand clear of his/her stands & let it be known. Even if it means having to to make sacrifices. We shouldn't be doing nothing when we know someone else is doing wrong. A little mistake one make can inflict negatively to the world. Mr Dan told us a quote. I think it's meaningful. "Watch your words, it becomes your thoughts. Watch your thoughts, it becomes your habit. Watch your habit, it becomes your character."

We also visited the Neuschwanstein Castle. I've realised that everyone should have their goal & dream. Once it's decided, we should pursue it. There's this quote saying "Pictures speaks a thousand words." After visiting the castle, i kind of have another line to add on. Pictures speaks a thousand words. But experience speaks more than just a thousand words. The castle was stunning. We can always look at pictures of the castle or watch it from television. But witnessing it yourself is so much different. That's what I'm trying to convey.

After the school visit, I've learnt more computer skills though it's merely power point slides. The preparation about Singapore & our school has made me understand better about the country I'm living in & the school I'm studying in. Most importantly, I've learnt to project my voice though i still couldn't get the hang of it.

Climbing Mt. Versuvius was our last activity. It's not easy climbing up especially when we're wearing heavy clothes & the weather conditions were so much different. It was really cold. I've learnt that motivation, determination & persistence is crucial.

I've so much more to say. I'll post it another day because i think i side track & didn't answer the questions well.

Until then, take care! (:

Ciao people:) I ain't doing too well... Heather, Ain and I have not adjusted to Singapore time... Never mind, i'm not here to complain about my problem, i am here to REFLECT!:) We've been to a total number of 4 countries.... Namely, Germany, Qatar, Italy and Austria. we made a stopover at Doha for about six hours. We had planned to have a city tour in Doha during the stopover instead of waiting in the airport. We went to visit the camel and falcon markets, Equestrian Club and the City Center Mall. i learnt quite of a few things actually.. Did you know that Doha's population is only one million??? So it's somewhat like Singapore only smaller... Out of the one million, only 300,000 are locals. The rest are foreigners. i feel the Dohan government is so nice to it's people.. Our tour guide told us that the government gives free land to it's people. Hence, not one local is homeless. While we were on our way to our destinations, our tour guide told us that we can actually distinguish the houses of locals and foreigners. Did i mention that the houses were MAJESTICALLY built? From what i saw, the locals had more flamboyant houses while the foreigners had plain-looking but still majestic houses. Our first stop was the camel market where camels were sold either for milk or meat. Our tour guide told us that camel milk is much higher in nutrients than in any other milk that we drink. However, he mentioned that it is an acquired taste. The Equestrian Club was where racing horses were held. We then headed to the City Center Mall. the area where the mall was was actually something like the CBD area in Singapore. only, the buildings there were much higher and beautiful. In fact, they were actually doing something like a mass production. It was very new to me to actually see like a whole city being built before me. Okay!!!!!!!! Enough yakking about Doha. Let's talk about Germany. At the Swan Castle, we learnt abot King Ludwig II. He was the last King to rule Germany. Apparently he was forced to take medication under a claim by officials that he was mentally ill. Until one day when he and his doctor were found dead in the Swan lake. Till now, no one knows the real reason behind his death. At the Dachau Memorial Camp, we learnt how the people were killed. It was one of the first concentration camps and all the other camps were modelled after it. Hitler taught his soldiers to be cruel. People were each given a spoon and they had to eat from a big pot of porridge. There were times when they killed so many people that they had to dig mass graves. We had a school visit on the next day. I learnt about the German education system. Apparently, students who wanted to go to University had to qualify for a specific secondary school. That type of school is called a Gymnasium. We headed to Marienplatz square. We were given time to learn about the monuments there on our own. It was very very fun:) I learnt about the fish fountain outside the New Town Hall. Every year, people washed their purses there to bring in the new year and hopefully with more wealth. We then took a drive to Venice, Italy. Before reaching Venice, we stopped at Hallein, Austria to visit the Durnberg Salt Mines. I learnt that salt was formed using the crystallisation method we learn in Chemistry. Upon the discovery of salt, Salzburg was able to develop because of its new found form of finances. We made our way to Venice on a water taxi. Venice is an island like Singapore. However, there are no cars on the island. The worst thing is that scientists have predicted that because of rising sea levels, Venice may soon be submerged under water in another couple of years. Come on people!!!!!!!Protect Mother Earth or places like this may very well become history. The last two places we visited were the Vatican City and Pompeii. At the Vatican city, we visited St Peter's Basilica. A Basilica is a Roman Catholic church. I also found out the way to the Pope's living quarters. I also visited the Capella Sistina(Sistine Chapel) and Raphael rooms. I learnt about how MichaelAngelo spent four years to complete the Sistine Chapel. Flash photography is not allowed there for fear that the paintings would fade. I learnt about the old and new testaments. The old was Moses and the new was Jesus. I learnt that the gladiators who fought in the Colosseum were convicts and they had to fight animals and win to keep their lives. In Pompeii, we learnt about how most Pompeiians were killed by inhaling poisonous gases from the volcano. The remaining people were buried alive due to pyroclastic flow. The climb to Mt. Vesuvius was tough but it taught me to persevere and to not give up which is quality i am in great need of. There are many active volcanoes around Mt. Vesuvius and i learnt that by measuring the amount of sulphuric gases, we can tell when it is about to erupt 3 weeks in advance. To end everything off, I'd like to thank all the teachers for making this trip possible. Mr Jani, for driving us around safely and on schedule. Mr Dan for taking care of us and making sure we eat our food. Last but not least, my new-found friends!!!!!!!! I really appreciate how you cared for me when i was suffering from motion sickness. Love you loads!!!:) Thanks for making it more memorable for me....I have definitely learnt more things which i can brag about now and i have learnt to appreciate Singapore much more...It really becomes a clean and green city if you have gone to Rome. Gone are the days when i complain about GST being unfair. i have learnt to also be more daring. Never did i think i would try squid ink pasta and actually like it. I wish i could write more but the library is closing..:( I heard quite a number of us are sick... Take care and drink lots of water people! With love, Ravetha

CIAO people! I'm currently suffering from jetlag! And it feels terrible. Well, actually im not the only one. Ravetha and Ain have the same problem too! We are awake when others are sleeping and we are sleeping when others are wide awake. This is so hilarious. And i heard that many of the others are sick. Do take care alright :D Ok, i think its high time i start on my reflection. Altogether, we have toured 4 countries. Mainly Qatar,Germany,Austria and Italy. The Cities that we visited were Doha,Munich,Salzburg,Venice and Rome. Firstly on Doha, I have learnt and realised a lot of things from the city tour in Doha. Doha is actually a city built in the middle of a desert. This is so amazing! And Doha only has a population of 1 million people. One interesting fact that i have learnt is that men in Doha are only allowed to marry up to a maximum of 4 wives. If they marry a fifth one, they would be sent to prison. First,we visited the camel farm and the tour guide there told us that camels were sold and bought for their meat and milk. We also visited the Equestrian Club, which was something like Singapore's turf club. All the horses there were racing horses and they go through physical training almost everyday. We got the chance to see one of the horses swimming in a pool. This exercise was to build up the horses' stamina and muscles. The horse was panting heavily and i really pitied it because it didn't seem to be swimming on its own accord. It was like being forced to do it. Next up was the falcon market. Falcons were sold and bought and over there in Doha, keeping falcons is like a form of expensive leisure which only the rich could afford. When we went into the shop to look at the falcons,we saw that they were being chained up and their eyes were covered. This is to keep the falcons from escaping and their eyes were covered so that they would not be agitated or scared when they see so many tourists. Next up is Germany. During our stay in Germany, we visited the swan castle,Dachau memorial camp and had our school exchange. At the swan castle(Hohenschwangau castle), we learnt about King Ludwig II and that he was the last king who ruled Germany. His officials insisted that he was mentally illed and thus fed him with medicine. He was found dead in the swan lake with his doctor one day and his death is still a mystery up till today. The next place that we visited was the Dachau Memorial Camp. Visiting this campsite was really an unforgettable experience. This camp was the first concentration camp. It was like travelling back in time and we found out how Hitler mistreated or tortured the Jews and other Germans during the concentration camp. The prisoners were forced to do labour work and they were given only very little food to survive with. Millions of people lost their lives and dignity in this camp. Those who survived this camp were really very lucky. We had the school exchange the next day and it was fun.The name of the school is Gymnasium Bad Aibling.A Gymnasium is a type of school people study in if they want to go to University. We were introduced to German education and their way of life in school. After the exchange program,we headed to the Marienplatz. We were given 6 euros each and 4 hours of free time to explore the place on our own. And we had to get our own lunch with the money given. We also learnt about the new and old town hall, the column of the holy mary and the fish fountain. The fish fountain is used once every year during the new year. People would wash their purses and wallets in the fountain to start the good year with more wealth. Next up was the Durnberg Salt Mine. We learnt how salt was produced in the past and how Salzburg developed as a country after the discovery of salt. The next day, we took a water taxi to Venice. Venice is an island and there are no cars or vehicles over there.People and tourists who want to leave or enter Venice would have to take the Gondolas or water taxis.Venice is also a tourist attraction. However, due to global warming,Venice is going to sink and disappear in another few years. This is sad! because Venice is really a very beautiful place. So people!Start saving the earth! Reduce,Reuse and Recycle! The last two places that we visited were The Vatican City and the city of Pompeii. In the Vatican City, we visited the Saint Peter's Basalical and the Sistine Chapel. through the tour in the Vatican city, i have learnt a lot about the Roman catholic culture. I think that this is something new to me as i am a budhist and i don't learn about Catholism often. We also visited the Colosseum where gladiators fought in the past. Prisoners were also forced to fight against each other or with wild animals like lions and tigers.Winners could walk out as free men and losers had to die. This served as a form of entertainment to the locals and tourists there. In my opinion, this is really a very cruel act. People were actually enjoying themselves at the expense of the prisoners' lives. They sold their souls for entertainment. Our last stop-the city of Pompeii. We toured the city which was once destroyed by the disastrous volcano eruption of mount Versuvius. Many Pompeiians died because they were living near volcanos. They didn'e know that it was a volcano. They thought that it was only a mountain with extremely fertile soil. Thus, they were not prepared at all when the volcano erupted. We also had the opportunity to climb Mount Versuvius! It was a tiring but fun and exciting climb. Overall,i have learnt alot of things like time management. Time management is really important as we counldn't be late for any of the activities.i have also become a more independent person. Without my family with me for the 10 days, i have learnt to take care of myself and get everything done by myself. I also realised that there are some things that we can only rely on ourselves to get it completed. I have also experienced the importance of friendship.During the trip,i had motion sickness and i am really thankful to those who have helped me. Like Kahmin and ain, they knew that i wasn't feeling well and they helped me to carry my luggage and somehow took care of me. Rachel and May too. They offered their medicine to me and Ravetha and helped whenever they could. Thanks people. I really appreciate your help :D I am also happy that i have made new friends. Lastly, i wanna thank the teachers for organising this Europe trip.Especially Mdm Eunice Koh,Miss Sazryna and Mr Gavin Lee. Without them,i wouldn't have the chance to visit such a nice country like Europe and learn so much more which i can't get from textbooks. Also! i have learnt quite alot on geography although i am a literature student.I feel really previleged to be able to go on thid trip.Thank you teachers, for entertaining us too. I would also like to thank the other 15 students who went for the trip. Without them, the trip would not be as exciting and fun. We enjoyed each other's company and we helped each other in times of need. During the 10 days,we went through thick and thin together. And not forgetting Mr Dan,our tour guide and Mr Jani, our bus driver.Without them, our trip would not be complete. Thanks again.
Love,Heather

Reflection On My Europe Trip

Crater of Mt. Vesuvius
Salt mine in Salzburg

Guten Tag! Ciao!

I would like to thank the entire Humanities teacher especially Mdm Koh, Ms Sazryna and Mr. Gavin for arranging this trip for us. I would also like to thank our tour guide Mr. Dan and our tour bus driver Mr. Jani for making this trip so enjoyable and ensure us a safe ride on the bus.

Germany, Austria and Italy are the three countries we went to visit. Those three countries are part of European Union or known as EU. The EU is a political and economic union of 27 member states, located in Europe. We can travel from Germany to Italy freely without passing through the customs as the EU is a customs union, travelers between EU countries do not have to pay customs duties. I will now share with you what I learn during this trip.

Similarities between Germany and Italy:
1. Germany and Italy is both a member of European Union.
2. Germany and Italy are two of the three countries who started World War II. The leader of Germany, Adolf Hitler and the leader of Italy, Benito Mussolini.
3. Germany and Italy both drive on the left side of the car.

Differences between Germany and Italy:
1. Italy traffic is much busier than Germany traffic. Italian driver park their cars along the road, this make the road narrower and thus slow down the traffic flow.
2. Germany is much colder than Italy due to the geographical location of their country. Germany is located in Central Europe and Italy is located in Southern Europe.
3. Germany is famous for their cars (BMW) and beer but Italy is famous for their pizza, spaghetti and pasta.

We were back in Singapore at last. Actually, I miss those days we were in Europe. This trip has changed me into a more independent person. I have also able to make more friends and get to know more about our teachers. We share those happiness and sadness together. It was a great learning experience for us as it helps me to gain more knowledge about Europe that is outside our textbook. It is a ‘once in a life time’ experience for me to travel so far away from Singapore. I really learnt a lot from this trip. Hope that there will be another chance for us to go Europe again, same people, and same places.
